Cliff Bennett’s bands’ gigs 1961-1969

Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on.  I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.

I’d like to encourage band members to get in touch to share memories, or for anyone to send corrections/clarifications to my email: Warchive@aol.com

Equally important, if you attended any of the gigs below or played in the support band, please do leave your memories below in the comments section for future historians to use. If you know of any missing gigs, please add them too, if possible, with the sources.

  2. incredible,i saw cliff bennett and the rebel rousers, several times, i lived in bedford at the time, anyway, we have a site called bedford mods ,reunited, and i have been posting some of my old photos, we were the original mods, went to all the all nighters, and to the gaiety theatre, and the dungeon etc etc, so, i got this great photo, outsdie a record shop in bedford, called carousels, with the booths etc, long gone now, but there is a huge poster for cliff bennett ,and the rebel rousers, at the corn exchange, bedford, where many top bands played, cream genesis, etc, we are trying to determine which year, i say 1966, another mod historian says ,1968, i see no mention of it here, by the way ,great work, i saw all the bands mentioned on here, and still go to gigs, and still play blues/soul etc, best regards ,graham ingle

  4. I saw Cliff Bennett at his Excellencys in Broad Street Salford just after they had released One Way Love,

  5. According to Record Mirror, the band were in Cologne on 11 March for a TV programme and were due to fly to the US in June (the latter seems unlikely)

  6. I remember seeing Cliff with the Rebel Rousers at Bridlington Spa in the summer of 1967, any idea of the date!!!

  7. I used to see Cliff & co a lot in West London.
He had a regular Sunday night gig at the Blue Moon Club, which was the clubhouse of Hayes FC pretty well throughout 1961/63. Obviously later but I moved to Brighton in Dec 1963.

He also had a regular gig on Saturday nights at Benson’s, in Uxbridge. I never went to that, because I was usually at the Ealing R&B Club on Saturdays, but two of my mates went to Benson’s to see the band frequently.

We always used to try to see the band on Thursday nights. This was often at a pub in Willesden – but I’ve forgotten its name. New singles would come out on Thursdays and we’d talk to Cliff about what we’d bought that day. Sometimes he’d have bought the same ones as we had. I recall the band played ‘Doctor Feelgood’ by Doctor Feelgood & the Interns on the day it came out and had made up an arrangement featuring a sax, though the original has no sax. Mucho respect for doing that so quickly.

This list is not all of the Rebel Rousers bookings, I was in the army stationed at Cove nr Farnbourough Hants from June 62- Sept 62 I went to see the Rebel Rousers at a pub in Farnbourough in about July/August 62. I actually had a chat with Cliff about a car a Sunbeam Rapier that he owned when he used to bring it in for service at the Times Garage Cowley where I worked at the time, this was before I joined the army in 62.

  11. Having had another look at this list I see the are no dates for Kew Boat House in Kew.I have seen them several times there in the 60s
