The Baroque Brothers

The Baroque Brothers and the Six Pents were house bands at George Massey’s La Maison Au Go Go in Houston, Texas in 1965.

The Six Pents went on to cut a few 45s (including “She Lied” on the Kidd label) before changing into the Sixpentz and then the Fun and Games Commission.

The Baroque Brothers only released this one 45. “So Glad Was I” combines distinctive folk-rock harmonies with a more typical bridge. The band is so competent that I wonder if they didn’t cut more records under a different name.

Members were Kirk Patrick, Bo Allison, Roger Romano and Jim Robertson. Both songs here are by Kirk Patrick, listed in BMI’s database as Har. Kirkpatrick.

The flip “Baroque au Go Go” is a light instrumental with horns and overdubbed crowd noise.

Thank you to Nancy Kuehl for the scans of the news articles and La Maison flyer. Another source for info was the 1960’s Texas Music site

  1. I love this title since I heard it on the first Gravel.

Too bad they didn’t do more… They were so competent indeed ! They remind very much of The Enfields.

  2. The two main guys in the Baroque Brothers were Kirk Patrick (vocals, lead guitar) and Rock Romano (vocals, rhythm guitar). They recorded a second single that didn’t get released, then broke up. Rock Romano joined up with the far more popular Six Pents (later Fun and Games Commission). He still occasionally plays in Houston today.

  3. No, my name is and was HAROLD Kirkpatrick and when the band broke up, I moved to Los Angeles and did studio work for awhile. Then went on to San Fransisco where I played guitar with the early version of Blue Cheer and then It’s A Beautiful Day. After that I played with an acid rock band called The Wedge. We opened for Quicksilver Messenger Service and Iron Butterfly at the Cow Palace. I could go on. After a sabbatical where I went to Europe and India I returned to the Bay Area and developed a little known West Coast traveling band called Sky River Band. We almost got a recording contract with Columbia, but the band fell apart. My name never was James. There was a rhythym player named James who played with the Misfits. The Misfits were our relief band at La Maison. John Hays has misremembered.

    1. Rock Romano shared this page with me. What memories….!
