Tony Knight’s Chessmen’s gigs 1964-1967

Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on.  I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.

I’d like to encourage band members to get in touch to share memories, or for anyone to send corrections/clarifications to my email: Warchive@aol.com

Equally important, if you attended any of the gigs below or played in the support band, please do leave your memories below in the comments section for future historians to use. If you know of any missing gigs, please add them too, if possible, with the sources.

  1. CHESSMEN

    Brown / Coxhill / Gummer / Martin / Reed recorded 2 tracks in 1964 released c. 2000 on a Lol Coxhill CD.

Brian Smith (AKA Wes Minster) joined the band on guitar for the Rufus Thomas UK tour (and left at the end of the tour) and guitarists don’t seem to feature until Fred D’Albert joined (or rejoined) in 67.

Almond left around August/September 65 to replace Clive Burrows when he left Zoot Money to join Alan Price

During 1965 they backed Martha & Vandellas, Mose Allison & Screaming Jay Hawkins on UK tour dates.

My notes say that Terry Martin left in late 65, replaced by Pete Carney and Jeff Reed left early 66 replaced by John Carroll.

Lol Coxhill left late 66 to join The GASS, Terry Ede (x Jeff Elroy & The Boys Blue) joined on tenor sax to replace him. Ede said he was only in the Chessmen ‘for a short stint’.

John Carroll was briefly replaced by Matthew Fisher (Procul etc.) on organ.

Dave Watkins (Magicians 1968) was an old friend of Knight & Martin from Wolverhampton

Tony Brown (Knight), Dave Coxhill & Fred D’Albert all helped form Sweetwater Canal with remnants of Freddie Mack’s band.

  2. should have been photos attached where it says “Gummer/Brown in armour-on horse” and where it says “Terry Ede in Italy” ! – can’t find a way of attaching the photos.

  3. I remember them playing often at the ‘El Partido’ club in Lewisham I
will ask my brother Mick if he remembers the dates but it would be in the early half of the 60’s

  4. Early 60’s they played regularly down The Scene Club, Ham Yard, Soho. I do not have the exact dates but saw them play there quite a few times. I thought they were brilliant! I seem to remember that Night Train was always their starting number.

  5. So that is what I was doing in the early ’60s.
We were just too busy travelling from gig to gig to keep more than a bookings diary!
Does anyone have a link to contact Tony Brown?

    1. Oh how I’d like to contact Tony. What are you up to? If you read this…or anyone who knows his whereabouts please pass on. Must have been 40 years ago….ouch. Do you still drive that crazy Commer?

      1. Have you managed to contact Tony? I know him and could pass on his contact details if you still need. His wife recently passed so I’m sure he might be in need of some good friends around.

        1. Hi
I went out with Tony when he was in Skin Alley, around 1970 – is he still alive? I’d love to contact him. I’ve been married to another drummer, John Coghlan of Status Quo, for more than 40 years.
          Gillie Coghlan, then Gill West

        2. Hi Grace – do you still have Tony’s contact details? I worked with him in the mid 80s and would love to get back in touch

    2. I remember you Jeff from a music shop in North Harrow where they sold organs. The Jag you used to drive! What days they were! I remember one club in Soho and a track called Before Dawn which went on half the night!

  6. Remember seeing them many times at The Scene, Soho in the early sixties. Many years later mt daughter was in the same class as Lol Coxhills son.

  7. I worked with Tony Knight for a couple years in London on guitar as you mentioned in one of your posts…..A great drummer he was….Lol Coxhil was a master musician and so was Johnny on baritone sax…My favorite song of Tony’s was the Seventh Son….and he was masterful on Midnight Hour….by Wilson Pickett…Had much fun in those days in England…Played most of the clubs with the Chessmen…The Bag ‘O Nails was the most happening club at the time, and the owners , two brothers Rick & John Gunnel also owned the Flamingo on Wardour Street, and Georgie Fame was the main feature very often….As a matter of fact I wrote one of his songs “Home is where the Heart is,” with Mike Snow from the Ferris Wheel,…..Those we’re great days, with Ronnie Jones, Geno Washington, vto name a few….Everyone hung out at the Flamingo….Tom Jones, Paul Mc Cartney, John Mc Laughclin a great jazz guitarist, Rod Stewart, etc etc… Wonderful Times…

    1. Terry

You were a great guitarist but bloody crap at cards as I remember – all those games in the van up and down motorways as I recall. (“Don’t worry to bait me”)

Thanks for saving my bacon one night down the Flamingo when that gorgeous blond took a fancy to me and her boyfriend was less than impressed. I still owe you a beer I think…

The tour I played on with Stevie Wonder always reminded me of you.

John Carroll – call me if you’d like to – via Nick

  8. Date to add (I was there)
