Ray King Soul Band’s gigs 1966-1969

Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on.  I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.

I’d like to encourage band members to get in touch to share memories, or for anyone to send corrections/clarifications to my email: Warchive@aol.com

Equally important, if you attended any of the gigs below or played in the support band, please do leave your memories below in the comments section for future historians to use. If you know of any missing gigs, please add them too, if possible, with the sources.

  1. I well remember Ray King and his band. My colleagues and I ran the mercer’s arms and the red house gigs. Also the Craven Arms in High street Coventry. Now Barclays Bank. Seem to think Ray played there for us too. Also remember John L Watson and the Web at the Red House. All of them fabulous musicians and totally lovely people.
I also think we put Fleetwood Mac on stage at the Mercer’s around the time of Albatross. Pete Green, rest his soul, was out of this world. As was his language!!! About 1969 I think.

  2. Thank you for your great research. I saw the band at Hatchets and you helped me rember name . In addition the address of All Star Club 9 a Artillery Passage. I never knew the address I saw Drifters there 2 am one Friday night in 67 or 68. Great work. A fab era .

  3. A great site – many happy memories of gig locations around Birmingham and Coventry. I was playing drums with “The Umpteenth Time” when Ray King Soul Band played the Swan in Yardley, 12July, 1967. A great Soul night was had by all present. Several other bands were there. The Swan is long gone – shame!!! Our regular gig for several years was at Chesford Grange, Kenilworth, where Ray King played in 1968. Really great band. Jeff Lynne also played with us at Chesford when he was with the “Andy Capps”. Thanks very much!!!

  4. You’ve certainly done a lot of research on Ray King, very interesting. I played bass in the group in 1966. One night I sang a duo with Ray at the Revolution Club, London & after the gig I was offered a recording deal with Decca Records so I left the group and became a solo artist.

  5. Thank you for the information. I took my girl friend to Hatchetts still remember a great night she (now wife since 1970) still comments one of the best
night out. Long live the memory. Once again great work
