The Lovin’ Kind and the Martels

The Lovin' Kind photo
Left to right: Harold Scott (Scotty), Terry Childers, Jerry Childers and Bill Traylor

Bill Traylor sent me this photo of the Lovin’ Kind, a four piece from the northeast edge of Kentucky. If anyone has scans or good quality transfers of the 45s, please contact me.

I had a band in the late 60’s from Ashland, KY called “The Lovin’ Kind”. It consisted of Jerry and Terry Childers, Harold Scott (son of Hal Scott of Hal Scott Enterprises) and myself. We made on 45 in ‘69 for, I believe, Plato but I have no copies. Jerry, Terry and myself were former members of The Martels before we broke away and formed the Lovin’ Kind.

The Martels originally formed around 1964 and consisted of Pat Loving, Terry Sanders, and others. I joined the group in 1966 and it was an 8 piece band at that time which consisted of Terry Sanders on drums, John Sturgill vocals, Danny Young on keys, Larry Creech and Larry “Frog” Johnson on sax, a trumpet player whose name I can’t remember, Terry Childers on bass, Jerry Childers on guitar and myself on lead guitar. We made one record in Lexington in 1968 and performed until 1969 when three of us left and formed The Lovin’Kind.

Both groups were booked by Hal Scott and we performed at colleges and in all the clubs in KY, Ohio, and West Virginia.

  1. The Lovin’ Kind were a great band.
They had a very broad repertoire for that era and performed all the songs with fire and polish.
And they had the Rascals spot on.

And, seriously, those Silvertone amps could really blast out some killer sounds!!!

I count myself fortunate to have become friends with Bill (HEY BILL!)during that time and had a few opportunities to sit in on bass guitar with him.

I welcome anyone wishing to contact me to do so at bjhughes[at]wowway[dot]com.

(Nice to see ya again Al)

  2. The Lovin’ Kind was a great band!!!! I saw them play out many times!!! All of us young guitar players in the area wanted to play like Bill!!!

  3. There was also a band in Portsmouth,Ohio, just 32 miles West of Ashland, called The Lovin’ Kind.I remember them being in existance around ’67 or ’68.They consisted of Richard Chapman,Buster Broughton,Dave Barrett,I forget the Drummers name. They practised just down the alley from me.They were pretty good for a “garage band”.

  4. The Martels started as Pat Loving on guitar, Terry Saunders on drums, Spud Speks on bass, and Damon Nuckels singing lead vocals, mostly Motown stuff. Danny Young on keys was added next, about 1964 I think, and then the UK invaded, and the band dumped Damon, whose grandfather started the NAACP in Ashland, Ky, for a Brit who found his way to Ashland….don’t know how that happened, named Howard Turner. Ferry Cross the Mercy and all that. Anyway, that was the starting lineup of the Martels, and I think Bill Traylor played in my first band the Misfits too. But thats for another post. And so is my next band The Fugitives, but do I list them in Ky or Ohio? Alfred, thanks for all your input, and great to hear from a “Mainline” after all this time. Danny Young

  5. Do you know of anyone with pictures or recordings of the martels? Howard was my father..he passed away about 15 years ago. Thank you for your time. Howard

  6. Excellent band – what a classic sound! I have a Lovin’ Kind 45 in my collection: “I’m Free” (A-Side) w/ “Can’t Explain” (B-Side) recorded by Blues Artists Record Label. Anyone know anything about that label – my guess is it was a private outfit that recorded bands for a fee (…?)

Thanks all for the comments – very informative (as well as a great website).

  7. Hello: I’m trying to see if anyone knows how I can contact Harold Scott, who performed with the Lovin’ Kind in the 1960s. I’m doing research on my deceased birth mother, Betty Louise Campbell Workman, who was a singer with some dance bands in WV and Ohio in the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s. I think she may have sung with Harold’s father Hal Scott’s band at some point, because my sister says she remembers Betty referring to someone named “Scotty” who Betty sang with. From what I can tell, Hal Scott is deceased, but I’m hoping Harold might know something about my mother performing with Hal.
If you know anything about Harold Scott, please send me an email at frank.christlieb@yahoo.com.
    Thank you,

  8. My brother Paul Conley played trumpet & was lead singer for the Martels for a period of time in the mid 60”s. They used to practice in Terry Sanders garage on 10th street in Ashland. I can remember it well because all the kids in the neighborhood were jealous of me because my brother would let me in the garage to listen.

I also remember my brother taking me to Moonlight Gardens for a party they were playing & I got to sit back stage…..it was really cool as an 8 year old!

  9. Ed Fields was the trumpet/cornet player for the Martels. Ed went on to play guitar/bass with Entrance (with Mike Fitzpatrick in Florida) and Menlo Park (with Mike Fitzpatrick, Gary Kessling, and Dave Copley) who gained much notice in the KY-Ohio-WV area in the 70’s and 80’s and with CARRIER in the early 90’s. Ed died in 2014.
