Chris Farlowe & The Thunderbirds’ gigs 1963-1969

Welcome to the first posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on and, where possible, I have added the sources used, whether they are newspapers or websites.  I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.

I’d like to encourage band members to get in touch to share memories, or for anyone to send corrections/clarifications to my email: Warchive@aol.com

Equally important, if you attended any of the gigs below or played in the support band, please do leave your memories below in the comments section for future historians to use. If you know of any missing gigs, please add them too, if possible, with the sources.

When the band split, Alan Shacklock went on to play with Babe Ruth. The rest of the band recorded as The Hill.

Many thanks to Alan Shacklock for his help in clarifying the band’s final lineups.

  3. I have Forever Changes supporting Chris Farlow at the Gaeity Ballroom Ramsey on 1st June 1968, although the group called Grannys Antics.

  4. Fabulous 208 lists the band’s line up as follows in late October:

    Chris Farlowe – lead vocals
    Albert Lee – lead guitar
Dave Greenslade – organ (he’d already left for Geno Washington)
    Ricky Charman – bass
Ian Hague – drums (he’d recently left for PP Arnold and The Nice)

  5. I met Chris Farlowe and PP Arnold back stage at the Skyline ballroom, Hull in 1967 or 1968, but I don’t see this gig listed

    1. Remember this too. Remember Chris introducing Carl Palmer on drums (was he only 16 then?) and Pete Solley was def on keyboards as I followed his career seeing him in the Terry Reid Band, Paladin, etc.

  6. This amazing site has some gigs missing from the list:

  7. Hi Nick. Great site. We were support act for Chris Farlowe at the Bull and Vic Dartford in May 1968. We were a local band called The Soul Explosion. Chris was phenominal. Also had the biggest roadie I had ever seen. We were also support for Zoot Money and Dantalions Chariot at Crayford Town Hall.

    1. What a rave from the grave Pete. Its Malcolm, I can’t believe I found this posting it seems like another life.
When I tell some of the stories you can see the look of disbelief in people’s faces like the time we loaded up quickly at the Bull at Birchwood and Kipper had to knock on the door to return the furniture we had taken for his flat!. My email is general-gordon@virginmedia.com

  8. Hi Everyone Bruce Waddell was a lifetime buddy of mine and we knew each other from Catford Cricket Club in the 60’s onwards. Sadly he passed away a couple of years ago. I know he joined the band in the 60’s but my last musical memory of him was entertaining us all playing honky-tonk piano in the Hotel St Nicolas in Remich Luxembourg around the turn of the 21st century
Merry Christmas and stay safe everyone…

  9. Hi Nick,
Could you please pass my details on to Pete Lovell, We have not seen each other since the late 60’s and it would be great to catch up.
    Thanks
    Malcolm.

  10. My band The Clockwork Orange (years before the film!) supported Chris Farlow and the Thunderbirds on the Central Pier, Morcombe in May 1967. It was the night the very young Carl Palmer was introduced to the Thunderbirds…and he impressed. My other memory of that night was being asked to vacate our dressing room in order for the press to interview Chris. But it was a great gig.

  11. New Year’s Eve 1965 Chris Farlowe was at the Flamingo. Wardour Street along with Geno Washington. All-nighter.
    I was there.
Is there anyone else out there who was also there?
