Unidentified Flying Objects with Lisa Kindred

The Unidentified Flying Objects in KRLA Beat
The Unidentified Flying Objects – what’s the story?!
Clockwise from left: Lisa Kindred, Helena Tribuno, Ann Sternberg and Laurie Stanton.

Lisa Kindred was a New York folk artist with an LP on Vanguard in 1965. The story goes, cult guru Mel Lyman had his henchman David Gude, who was the engineer on the session, steal the master tapes for her second Vanguard LP. Warner Bros./Reprise unwittingly issued it in 1970 as The Lyman Family with Lisa Kindred: American Avatar.

Kindred became part of the blues scene in San Francisco in the late ’60s. What I didn’t know until I came across this clipping in KRLA’s Beat paper was that she was briefly part of a L.A. pop group, the Unidentified Flying Objects. They certainly didn’t make it big, as expected, but I wonder if they recorded any material – if so I’d like to hear it.

Happy New Year 2010!

I’ll be celebrating at the Roky Erickson show in Brooklyn on January 1!

  1. Thanks for pointing that out. I wish there were more time with musicians and less with Bernstein talking, but still cool. The UFOs get a lot of interview time considering they didn’t have a record out or any recognition outside of LA. I noticed Helena Tribuno is listed as “Diane Tribuno” in the film and Laurie is listed as Lorry Stanton.

Great to see Pam Polland of Gentle Soul interviewed. Also interesting to see Frank Cook listed as ‘leader’ of Canned Heat.

  2. The January 1967 edition of ‘cavalier’ magazine features an ‘exclusive interview with the ufo’s’. It’s a 5 page interview with Laura, Lisa, Helena, Ann and their manager, ‘showbiz veteran’, Bobbi Dodd.
I would love to hear the music…They describe it as rock and roll and ‘a happy blend of country and blues’.

    1. Do you know if it is possible to see this anywhere? I googled it without much luck. Much appreciated

      1. Hi Julia, I have pictures of the ‘Cavalier’ interview. That’s how I found out about the group, and what brought me here. It’s pretty extensive and includes a great photo of the band surrounded by smoke, it’s really cool looking! If you have any way I could contact you I would be more than happy to send it to you. 🙂

  3. Per Domenic Priore’s book on the LA scene, they appear in an Andrew Meyer film called “An Early Clue To A New Direction” doing a song called “I’m A Woman.”

If I am not mistaken, they’re also in the ’67 exploito film “The Love Ins” along with the Chocolate Watch Band and The New Age.
