The Shevelles’ gigs 1964-1968

Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on and, where possible, I have added the sources used, whether they are newspapers or websites.  I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.

I’d like to encourage band members to get in touch to share memories, or for anyone to send corrections/clarifications to my email: Warchive@aol.com

Equally important, if you attended any of the gigs below or played in the support band, please do leave your memories below in the comments section for future historians to use. If you know of any missing gigs, please add them too, if possible, with the sources.

19 thoughts on “The Shevelles’ gigs 1964-1968”

  1. Shevells (sometimes spelt Shevelles)

    other dates –
04/09/65 – Goldhawk Beat Club, Shepherds Bush
06/05/66 – Mister McCoys, Middlesbrough with The Jazz Board

I have copies of ads or posters for all these.

    1. Hi Dave
Trevor Lewis was my cousin, he passed away around 30 years ago, I’ve managed to get some singles and posters via eBay but don’t have any photos.
My dad would tell me stories of when he lived on Portmanmoor road Splott in Cardiff where his mother owned and played a piano, his sister Margret(Peggy) had a son Trevor and Granny Florence Lewis taught him to play piano, his friend and neibour would come in and sing her name was Shirley Bassey, they both went on to do great things, unfortunately I can’t find as : much info photos of the Shevelles as Our Shirley if you have anything that would be great.
      Yours Russell Payne.

  2. Ricky Tick Club dates for the Shevelles –
28/01/66 – Ricky Tick Club Staines Town Hall
10/03/66 – Ricky Tick Club, Harvest Moon Club, Guildford
03/09/66 – Ricky Tick Club, Barry Avenue, Windsor

  3. just found another date !
23/09/63 – Tony Sheveton (spelt Sheverton on ad) & The Shevelles – Rex Ballroom, Cambridge. This appears to be one of a series iof 3 gigs promoted by the early Ricky Tick Club. Cyril Davies was the week before and the Stones the week after. The poster for the Cyril Davies gig is very obviously a R-T poster

  4. some dates from 64 – all the Flamingo Club, Wardour St.
24.01.64 – Tony Sheveton & The Shevelles with Georgie Fame & Blue Flames – there is a missprint in the Record Mirror which shows the Flamingo gig list also as the gig list for Jazzshows Jazz Club (AKA the 100 Club)

My cousin was Trevor Lewis keyboard with the Shevelles he passed away around 30 years ago I’ve managed to get some singles and posters from eBay but no photos.
My dad would tell me the stories of growing up on Portmanmoor rd Splott with his sister Margret( Peggy) and her son Trevor lived where his mother Florence Lewis taught Grandson Trevor to play piano and his friend and neibour Shirley Bassey would come in and sing
They Both went on to do great things,
I would love to see some photos of the Shevelles if you have any to share.
        Yours Russell Payne.
