The Hides

From Pennsylvania, the Hides released just one 45 in 1966 before disappearing. The only member I know of is John Marsiglio. The description on his website:

At age 15 he started “The Hides” from the ashes of The Runaways and The Ban-Lons. They cut some tracks at Gateway Studio’s in Pittsburgh. Shortly after his 17th birthday “The Hides” released a single “When I See The One I Love”, but the “B” side “Don’t Be Difficult” received more attention. John promptly quit the band because he didn’t sing “Don’t Be Difficult”.

Supposedly two other tracks were recorded but never released. “Don’t Be Difficult” was written by Sam & Marsiglio, “When I See The One I Love” by Cheplick & Marsiglio.

  1. The Hides were a great “garage” band. It started with John Marsiglio of Irwin on lead guitar, myself of Irwin PA on bass, Ken Cheplik, of Jeannette on rhythm guitar and George Swanson from Irwin on drums. George left the band and Bruce Shutter of Jeannette joined. The record was cut with Bruce on drums. The manager of the band for a time was Harry Latangio of Latrobe…famous for Harry’s Danceland with acts that included young acts Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry etc. Mostly we practiced at John Marsiglio’s Mom and Dad’s garage in Westmorland City, PA in the borough of Biddle, PA. The other two tracks that were recorded were also written by Cheplik and Marsiglio. I do not have the masters and I forget the names but John Marsiglio would know and has the masters. It was a great time and one that created many memories forever!

  2. Garagehangover Gold. Thanks for providing some background Ed. I listen to Don’t be Difficult 5 times a week for the past 3 years between the several compilations it was included on and having it free standing on all mp3 players I own. Actually, 5 times per listen because I keep hitting replay – so more like 25 times per week. I absolutely love that song and proud of knowing it is from regional Pittsburgh heritage. Pairs great for podcasts with bookending clips of Night of the Living Dead (also gives me another venue to to listen to it again).

Ed – Pull out the bass and get the boys out on guitar and keep playing this classic; but let us know where and when so I can be there.

  3. I can remember seeing The Hides perform once in the lower level of Murphy’s 5 &10 in Jeannette and purchased an autographed copy of the 45 RPM pictured above. I still own it.
