Cinquetti

The Athens group Cinquetti were together from 1967 until about 1969. Here are two excellent versions of ’60s hits. On one side is a fuzz version of Jackie Lomax’s “You Better Get Going”, sung in greek as “Panta Konta Mou” (Always Near To Me).

The A-side is actually a cover of Brazilian Roberto Carlos’ “Namoradinha de um amico meu” (rendered in italian on the label “L’innamorada de un amico mio”). The original had been a big hit in Greece, and this version is just as good.

I adjusted an autotranslation of the following list of band members from a good list of 60’s bands in Greece.

Lakis Jiordaneli: Organ, vocals
Dimitri Tambossis: Lead guitar, vocals (-1967, + Dimitris Katakoyzinos -1969, + Manolis Soyvatzis)
Antoni Trjantafyllou: Bass (-1967, + Andreas Metallidis) (a comment below mentions Spyros Metaxas of the Stormies on bass)
Kostas Papaioanou: Drums (-1969, + Antonis Lo’xas)
Vasilis Tataroglouu: Vocals (-1969, +Ha’ris Papada’tos)

  1. Cinquetti were a Greek group formed in Athens in late 1967. Their members included Lakis Jiordaneli (vocals-keyboards) who followed a successful solo career as a singer in the 70s, Dimitris Tambosis (electric guitar) who followed a successful solo career in France, Kostas Papaioanou (drums) who joined in the early 70s the very successful groups of Greek folk-rock The Poll, and Spyros Metaxas (bass) ex member of the garage-pop The Stormies. They performed live in several Athenian nightclubs of the era, and their material mostly included covers of well-known pop songs. The single presented here was recorded in 1968 and the A side To koritsi tou filou mou (L’innamorada de un amico mio) was their most successful record.

  2. Jackie Lomax’s “You Better Get Going” was recorded in 1966/67 by the
Lomax Alliance, but remained unreleased till recently
(http://www.jackielomax.com/songswithaudio/youbettergetgoingnow.html). The Australian band Zoot recorded the song and their single was released in August 1968 (http://www.milesago.com/Artists/zoot.htm – see Discography).
Two years before, I found out, from an old Greek magazine, that the Cinquetti’s version was released in April 1968, so I wondered were from the Greek band knew the unreleased till then song.
Last summer I met the Cinquetti’s guitarist who plays in this single and he’s not mentioned in the line-up above. His name is Stelios Karydas (Στέλιος Καρύδας, http://www.discogs.com/artist/%CE%A3%CF%84%CE%AD%CE%BB%CE%B9%CE%BF%CF%82+%CE%9A%CE%B1%CF%81%CF%8D%CE%B4%CE%B1%CF%82). I asked him about the song but he didn’t remembered. So remains a mystery how a Greek band was the first to record and release the Jackie Lomax’s song.
The singer in “ΠΑΝΤΑ ΚΟΝΤA ΜΟΥ” (B side) was Dimitris Katakouzinos (who later went in Paris and played with the Greek band Axis, http://www.discogs.com/search?type=all&q=Dimitri+Katakouzinos&corrected=1). On the A side the singer was Lakis Jordanelli.

    Costas Arvanitis, from Athens, Greece
contributor to the books: Fuzz, Acid & Flowers, The Tapestry Of Delights, Dreams Fantasies & Nightmares.

  3. I think this is a mistake : Cinquetti actually were created in 1965 and the first members were certainly Kostas Papaioanou – Drums , Vasilis Tataroglou – Vocals , Argyris Koulouris – guitar and two other unidentified , one of which perhaps Kostas Karydas . Lakis Jordaneli arrived only in 1967 .
